What are Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs)?

Alternative Investment Funds (AIF) are one of the fastest-growing investment avenues for investors to look beyond mutual funds and listed equity. AIF funds raise capital from sophisticated investors and invest it in private equity, SMEs, and structured strategies that are not normally available on public markets.

All SEBI-registered AIFs in India are regulated by a specific regulatory framework, and this means that alternative investments are available in India to investors with transparency and an element of oversight. AIFs are not for retail investors. The minimum investment in AIF is ₹1 crore per investor, which is a serious allocation for HNIs, family offices, and institutions.

As interest in AIF India grows, so does the conversation around performance. Investors evaluating the, Best AIF funds in India and Top AIFs in India are increasingly comparing AIF returns in India across categories, looking for the best-performing AIF in India and top-performing AIF in India based on consistency rather than one good year.

Categories of AIFs

AIF Category 1

AIF Category 2

AIF Category 3

cardImage

SEBI classifies AIF in India into three broad categories, from SME-focused funds to VC funds, and understanding them is the first step before choosing where to allocate capital. When comparing options, the best-performing AIF in India and the best AIF in India are usually judged on consistency across market cycles, not just one strong year.

AIF Category 1

AIF Category 2

AIF Category 3

cardImage

Category 1 is built around funds that the government views as economically desirable, including SME funds, infrastructure funds, and social impact funds. Investors exploring alternative investments in India often start here, since AIF category 1 comes with government incentives and tax benefits for backing early-stage growth. This category is a common entry point for those new to AIF investment.

AIF Category 2

AIF Category 3

cardImage

Category 2 consists of private equity funds, debt or credit funds, real estate funds, and fund-of-funds structures. These funds do not employ excess leverage and are meant for investors seeking long-term capital appreciation in unlisted or growth-stage companies. The Indian AIF funds in this category are not so much focused on quick exits but on steady, long-horizon value creation.

AIF Category 3

cardImage

Category 3 is for hedge-fund-type strategies such as long-short equity, arbitrage, and algorithmic trading. They have leverage and are aimed at experienced investors who are willing to take on more risk for the best AIF returns. The purpose of Category 3 strategies is short-term, market-driven performance, not building the company for the long term.

How to Invest in AIF in India?

Helping investors move confidently toward long-term growth.
Getting into alternative investments in India isn’t as simple as clicking a button on an app; it’s a high-stakes deal. You generally
need to commit at least a minimum investment of ₹1 crore AIF, but you don’t have to pay it all at once. Usually, a wealth manager
or a private bank will walk you through the heavy KYC and set up the demat account. Once you’ve signed the contract, the fund manager
sends "drawdown" notices only when they actually find a deal worth funding. Your capital is then locked away for years while those
investments mature, so you have to be okay with playing the long game. It’s a serious marathon for anyone looking to
diversify beyond the usual stock market.
